Admission Information

Thank you for your interest in our Graduate Program in Mathematics. The following is a check-list of all items that you will need to complete to apply for it.

I. Application Procedures

<a> US Applicants

In order to evaluate your application, we need the following documents:

  • Apply on line through "Texas Common Application Form."
  • Two copies of your official transcripts with degree(s) posted sent directly to us by each of the colleges and/or universities you have attended in the past.
  • Your official GRE (Verbal and Mathematical portions) scores. Your official GRE scores for the Subject Test in Mathematics is recommended, but not required.
  • A short "Statement of Interests and Goals." Some topics to address: favorite courses; prizes or awards in mathematics or related areas; experience in using or teaching mathematics; motivation for beginning or returning to graduate school; expectations for graduate training; immediate and eventual career goals.
  • A list of advanced (post-calculus) mathematics courses taken, including title, text (if any), instructor, and grade received.
  • Three letters of reference. At least one should be from a professional mathematician. It can be sent by mail or online
  • If you want to apply for teaching fellowship, please fill out the Online Teaching Fellowship Application form.

Sending all correspondence directly to the Department of Mathematics will facilitate the admission process.

Deadlines for admission for US students are:
Fall Semester -- June 5th
Spring Semester -- December 4th



<b> International Applicants

In order to evaluate your application, we need the following documents:

  • Apply on line through "Texas Common Application Form." In case you are unable to do so, please let us know so that we should send paper application form to you by regular mail.
  • Two copies of your official transcripts with degree(s) posted of the colleges and/or universities you have attended in the past.
  • Your official GRE (Verbal and Mathematical portions) scores. Your official GRE scores for the Subject Test in Mathematics is recommended, but not required.
  • Official TOEFL scores. For unconditional admission we require a minimum score of 550 (or 213 for the computer version test; or 79 for the internet based test). We also accept official IELTS score with the minimum score 6.5.
  • A short "Statement of Interests and Goals." Some topics to address: favorite courses; prizes or awards in mathematics or related areas; experience in using or teaching mathematics; motivation for beginning or returning to graduate school; expectations for graduate training; immediate and eventual career goals.
  • A list of advanced (postcalculus) mathematics courses taken, including title, text (if any), instructor, and grade received.
  • Three letters of reference; at least one should be from a professional mathematician. It can be sent by mail or online
  • Two passport-sized photos of yourself.
  • If you want to apply for teaching fellowship, please fill out the Online Teaching Fellowship Application form.
  •  International students are charged a nonrefundable application fee of $75 US dollar which can be paid by credit card or by check or money order (send to the math department) made payable to the University of Houston.

FALL Semester -- May 1st
SPRING Semester -- October 1st

 



II. Teaching Fellowship Application

If you are interested in a Teaching Assistantship, please have your application completed by March 15. Teaching Assistantships are generally offered for students beginning in the Fall semester. Please complete online at Online Teaching Fellowship Application or download the application (.doc or .pdf  format) and submit to the Department Graduate Advisor using the below address
