Teaching Houston

teachHoustonteachHOUSTON, a pioneering program at the University of Houston to put more math and science teachers into inner city classrooms, is growing rapidly as more and more Cougars answer the call to educate the next generation. With nearly 400 students enrolled in the program, the goal is to graduate 100 secondary math and science teachers each year.

The program provides hands-on training to science, computer science and math majors interested in teaching by pairing them with master teachers at UH and mentor public school teachers.

The future teachers are assigned to Houston-area public schools where they observe classrooms and then try teaching lessons beginning early in their college career. Students rotate through elementary, middle school and high-school classrooms. Students who attend full time can complete a science or math degree and earn education certification in four years.

teachHOUSTON is modeled after a successful teacher training program at the University of Texas, and its enrollment is the largest of the 33 similar programs throughout the country.

It received a highly competitive grant from the National Math + Science Initiative, and subsequent donations from foundations and individuals help provide work-study stipends and scholarships to teachHouston’s most dedicated students.
